The Notebook (Le Grand Cahier) – Regent Square Theater

MCDNOTE EC045

Director János Szász‘s adaptation of author Agota Kristof‘s bestseller follows the story of two boys who by studying the evil surrounding them learn to rely on their loyalty to one another, ultimately surviving in the face of challenging circumstances. Towards the end of World War II, people in big cities are at the mercy of air raids and death by starvation. A desperate young mother leaves her 13‐year‐old twin sons at their grandmother’s house in the country, despite the fact that this grandmother is a cruel and bestial alcoholic. The villagers call her “the Witch” because she is rumored to have poisoned her husband long ago. Previously pampered, the twins must learn how to survive alone in their new, rural surroundings. They realize that the only way to cope with the absurd and inhumane world of adults and war is to become completely unfeeling and merciless. The Notebook will screen from October 3rd through October 9th at Regent Square Theater.

Andrew (Miles Teller), a promising 19-year-old drummer at a cutthroat Manhattan music conservatory, has little interest in being just a musician. Haunted by his father’s failed writing career and plagued with the fear that mediocrity just might be genetic, Andrew dreams of greatness. Determined not to follow in his father’s footsteps, he practices daily until his hands literally bleed. The pressure of success ratchets into high gear when he is picked to join the school band led by the infamous Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), a brutally savage music instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student’s potential. Under Fletcher’s ruthless direction, Andrew begins to pursue perfection at any cost—even his humanity. Whiplash opens on October 10th at the Manor Theatre.
