Shepherd Wellness Community (SWC) is the only AIDS Community Center serving the 11-county region of southwestern Pennsylvania. Since its inception in 1987, the SWC has offered supportive services for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. On Feb. 20th, the center teams up with the Hollywood Theater to host a special benefit screening of the retro comedy Psycho Beach Party.
Based on a play by Charles Busch, the multi-genre spoof stars Lauren Ambrose as Chicklet, a schizophrenic surfer chick whose alter-ego, Ann, is a promiscuous, violent, foul-mouthed party girl. When a rash of murders occur, Ann’s behavior makes Chicklet a prime suspect, along with a surfing guru, a B-movie actress, and a Swedish exchange student. Psycho Beach Party also stars Busch and Thomas Gibson (Dharma and Greg), as well as a then unknown Amy Adams.
Doors open at 7 p.m. followed by an 8 p.m. showtime. Guests can enjoy a number of activities before the film, including surf music by The Vertigo-go, a hula hoop contest, a limbo contest, a beach wear contest (male and female), and vintage horror movie trailers. There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and are available for purchase at Showclix. All net proceeds from the event will go toward the SWC.
